Our Student Life
“It is our inward journey that leads us through time. Forward or back, seldom in a straight line, most often spiraling. Each of us is moving; changing, with respect to each other. As we discover, we remember; remembering, we discover. And most intensely do we experience this when our separate journeys converge.”
—Eudora Welty, One Writer's Beginnings
What does it mean when we say, as we do in our Mission, that The Epiphany School of Global Studies is a place where “learning is stretched beyond the classroom walls”?
To answer that question, think back on your own school experiences. What exactly do you remember from school? What stands out in your mind? What stories do you recount to others? If you’re like most people, you probably remember specific experiences more than anything else: the big game, the role you played on stage in front of the crowd, a field trip, the song you sang, or perhaps even the prom. Compare those memories to day 104 in your English class. What did you learn in class on that day? Are the memories as clear and vivid?
Most likely they aren’t. Volumes of research—and common sense—indicate that experience amplifies memory. So, at The Epiphany School of Global Studies, we make each outside activity a learning experience, in the hope that those lessons will be remembered forever. Our students engage in numerous activities, and our advisors, coaches, and performance directors look for ways to help students learn the value of respect, discipline, determination, courage, and fair play—all while having a lot of fun.
The Epiphany School of Global Studies is a fun and exciting place before the first bell in the morning and after the last bell in the afternoon. Our students enjoy the myriad opportunities that await them and the time spent practicing and playing with friends. At The Epiphany School of Global Studies, every day we find ourselves—as students, as teachers, as neighbors seeking to honor one another’s humanity and gifts—standing at a crossroads. If you are a student at Epiphany, you will be challenged. You will be encouraged. You will take risks. You will surely have detours. But in the end, you will know that you’ve earned your own voice and your own journeys; both inward and facing the world.
That, in a nutshell, is the educational atmosphere—both within and beyond the classroom—that we strive to create at the school.
